The Newt Gingrich Poll

Newt Gingrich has begun suggesting in conversations with Republican activists and interested parties that Fred Thompson's candidacy could potentially prove hot enough to keep him out of the race. He’s not saying he’s in, he’s not saying he’s out -- but he's begun asking for feedback on whether the party would be interested in him.

Gingrich has always said he'd look at the state of play in September, then judge the field on the merits and the perceived need for his candidacy. Insiders have said from the start that all the presidential speculation was merely Gingrich flexing his influence to sell books and trying to join and elevate the debate.

But since Fred joined that debate, there hasn’t been a lot of focus on Newt or his ideas -- so he's begun floating a trial balloon of sorts with interested Republicans to determine whether or not there is still a desire for another candidate out there, or if Fred has filled the roster.

He's not saying that’s the case, he's asking whether it’s the case. Call it the the Newt Gingrich poll.

Democratic Debate Musings

The latest Washington Post/ABC News poll has some Clinton staffers feeling very confident in her standing as the Democratic front runner. In fact, they're fighting the inclination to get downright cocky; when discussing the campaign, they have to catch themselves to mention the competition, and almost joke about a challenge from Obama and the fact that Edwards is competitive in Iowa.

Meanwhile, Obama's people are yet again telling reporters that the Illinois Senator is going to come out firing tonight, talking tough on politics of change. Of course, they've been saying that since the after his disappointing first debate, and the candidate has yet to actually deliver the goods.

Too Many GOP Debates?

With the absolute barrage of debates and forums on both sides of the aisle, campaigns and parties can't be blamed for trying to gain a little freedom over their own schedules. The RNC has now joined the Democrats in attempting to manage the number of debates its candidates are committed to attending.

The GOP claims that it's working to maximize the number of possible debates in order to have the biggest impact on the electorate -- while the Democrats merely wanted to cut back the overall number when they approached the DNC about sanctioning only a few debates (the party eventually sanctioned just 6 debates, supposedly at the request of the Edwards campaign). The Republican candidates say they want to meet all the invitations, but that with so many on the agenda they need the Republican party to actually mediate for them. It’s an open question as to how many of these debates will go forward.

Rudy vs Mitt - the FEC reports

Who's the fundraising leader among Republicans -- Mitt Romney or Rudy Giuliani? Mitt raised more over the course of the year, but had to kick in $6.5 million of his own fortune in the second quarter. Giuliani had a better Q2 and has millions more in the bank. But Rudy's argument is set to get stronger with the release of final second quarter fundraising reports -- which will show that Romney's campaign has been burning through cash at a blistering pace. They've spent nearly $5 million on ads, and a rival campaign points out some other questionable spending -- including $7K on flowers.

Meanwhile, the principle tactical complaint about the Giuliani campaign has been that there's a disorganized, helter-skelter feel to the operation. But the campaign can point to its FEC filing, which will show a far smaller burn rate and $14.6 million in primary money in the bank, to disprove the notion that Rudy's running anything less than a tight ship.
